OK, let's get it out of the way. Where do we at MMH fall on the endless conversation about the root causes of Obesity. Even though our understanding of this issue has come a long way in the scientific and medical realms, there are still those who oversimplify, blame and shame patients with obesity. The so called Gurus online give simple answers to complex questions which can further disempower patients when those simple solutions fall short. So below we lay out our views on the complex issue of obesity.
Obesity: A Complex
Metabolic Condition Requiring a Comprehensive Approach
At Mission Metabolic Health, we understand that obesity is a complex metabolic condition that demands a deeper understanding and a comprehensive approach. It is not merely a matter of discipline or willpower, but rather a multifaceted disease influenced by genetic, environmental, and physiological factors.
The Changing Landscape of Obesity
The prevalence of obesity has rapidly increased in recent decades, reflecting profound changes in our food environment and lifestyle. According to the World Health Organization, the global prevalence of obesity has nearly tripled since 1975. This trend cannot reasonably be attributed solely to individual choices but rather to a confluence of factors, including the increased availability of calorie-dense, nutrient-poor foods, sedentary lifestyles, and societal influences.
Genetic and Physiological Complexities
At Mission Metabolic Health, we recognize that obesity is not merely a result of overeating; it is a complex metabolic disorder influenced by genetic predispositions and physiological mechanisms. Our team of experts stays up-to-date with the latest research, which has identified numerous genetic variants associated with an increased risk of obesity, highlighting the role of heredity in this condition. Furthermore, we understand that hormonal imbalances, metabolic disorders, and other underlying medical conditions can contribute to weight gain and make weight loss more challenging.
Environmental and Socioeconomic Factors
We acknowledge that socioeconomic factors, such as poverty, food insecurity, and limited access to healthy food options, can significantly impact an individual's ability to maintain a healthy weight. Additionally, environmental factors like lack of safe outdoor spaces for physical activity, sedentary occupations, and inadequate access to healthcare can exacerbate the risk of obesity.
Moving Beyond Simplistic Advice
At Mission Metabolic Health, we recognize the limitations of simplistic advice like "eat less and exercise more." Such advice fails to acknowledge the multifaceted nature of obesity and the complex interplay of factors involved. Instead of perpetuating frustration and guilt, we strive to empower our patients by providing personalized, evidence-based guidance tailored to their unique circumstances.
Our Comprehensive Approach
Our approach to obesity management is comprehensive and patient-centered. We begin by conducting a thorough evaluation to identify underlying medical conditions, predispositions, and environmental factors that may contribute to weight gain. Based on this assessment, our multidisciplinary team develops a personalized treatment plan that includes:
Nutritional Counseling: Our coaches work closely with patients to develop sustainable and enjoyable dietary plans that address individual preferences, cultural backgrounds, and medical needs.
Behavioral Therapy: our coaches and physician provide options for cognitive-behavioral therapy and mindfulness techniques to help patients develop healthy coping mechanisms and overcome emotional barriers to weight management.
Medication Management: Our physician may recommend medications to support weight loss efforts and address underlying metabolic conditions.
Exercise Planning: Our coaches design tailored physical activity programs that consider individual abilities, preferences, and access to resources.
Bariatric Surgery Evaluation: Surgical interventions are not the focus of our practice and our doctor has previously had success medically treating those expecting to end up with bariatric surgery. For patients who meet specific criteria, our team can evaluate the suitability of bariatric surgery and provide comprehensive pre- and post-operative support.
Empowering Patients on Their Journey
At Mission Metabolic Health, we understand that obesity is a complex and challenging condition, but we believe that with the right support and a comprehensive approach, lasting improvements in health and well-being are achievable. By acknowledging the multifaceted nature of obesity and adopting a compassionate, patient-centered approach, we aim to empower our patients on their journey towards better health.
If you or a loved one is struggling with obesity, we invite you to schedule a consultation with our team. Together, we can develop a personalized plan that addresses the unique factors contributing to your condition and provides the support you need to achieve your health goals. Phew, glad we got that out there.
